ALDI SÜD and Wemolo Launch After-Hours Parking in Munich

Table of contents

At six selected ALDI SÜD locations, 81 existing parking spaces are now digitally bookable after store closing, without sealing new areas; from €5 per night up to €50 per month.

Munich, July 23, 2026. Parking pressure, crowded residential streets, scarce space: ALDI SÜD and the Munich-based technology company Wemolo (www.wemolo.com) are making supermarket parking spaces in Munich digitally bookable after store closing time. At six selected ALDI SÜD locations across the city, residents can now use 81 existing parking spaces in the evenings, at night, and on Sundays, without any new areas being sealed. The locations are in Berg am Laim, Trudering, Neuperlach, Feldmoching-Hasenbergl, Hadern, and Freimann. Rates range from €5 per night to €50 per month. As part of the Munich pilot, ALDI SÜD and Wemolo are examining how the offer is received and whether further locations will follow. After locations in Krefeld, Augsburg, and the Allgäu and Oberland regions, Wemolo's home market now follows.

Munich makes room without new construction

The principle is simple: during the day, the ALDI parking spaces are available to customers; after store closing, they are digitally released for residents. Booking takes place via a web app at www.go.wemolo.de/aldi or via QR codes at the stores. No app installation is required. Before the booking expires, the system sends a reminder by email and in the web app. The booking can then be directly extended or renewed. The parking spaces can be used Monday to Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m., and all day on Sundays. In Munich's rental market, where private parking space rents in more central locations are often in the three-digit range per month, this creates an affordable alternative.

This is made technically possible by Wemolo's barrier-free license plate recognition. Users enter their license plate number when booking. The system automatically checks whether the vehicle is authorized to park during the booked period. In this way, existing parking areas are used multiple times, without barriers, tickets, or additional sealing of surfaces.

ALDI SÜD opens parking areas to residents

Greta Petersen, Director Real Estate at ALDI SÜD: “With the after-hours parking offer, our ALDI SÜD stores are now also contributing to improving the traffic situation in Munich. At six locations, we are relieving public space and reducing local parking pressure — all without any additional land use. For us, this too means doing good for everyone.”

Patric Wolf, Chairman of District Committee 12 Schwabing-Freimann, on the launch at Heidemannstraße: “I welcome the opportunity for secondary use of the ALDI parking spaces outside of opening hours and am curious to see how the surrounding population takes up the offer.”

Six locations, one principle: making better use of existing space

The six locations are situated in different Munich districts but follow the same logic. Residential use, commuter traffic, densification, and limited street space meet parking areas that are free outside of store opening hours. This is exactly where the Munich pilot comes in. It makes existing ALDI SÜD areas additionally usable in the evenings, at night, and on Sundays, creating an offer for neighborhoods where finding a parking space is part of everyday life for many residents.

Berg am Laim: Hermann-Weinhauser-Straße 90 (13 parking spaces)

Berg am Laim combines long-established residential areas with new neighborhood developments. Additional housing has been built in recent years around Berg-am-Laim-Straße and in the new Baumkirchen Mitte district. After-hours parking creates a further offer here on already existing space, without placing additional demands on public space.

Neuperlach: Maximilian-Kolbe-Allee 1 (15 parking spaces)

Neuperlach is one of the major residential areas in southeast Munich. Many people live here in a dense structure, while the district is also shaped by local retail, public transport, and commuter traffic. After-hours parking supplements the existing parking supply with spaces that have so far remained unused outside of store opening hours.

Trudering: Bognerhofweg 5 (14 parking spaces)

Trudering is a long-established residential area in eastern Munich, characterized by single-family homes, multi-family housing, and ongoing densification. During the day, the spaces serve shoppers; in the evenings and at night, they can supplement the parking supply around the residential streets.

Feldmoching-Hasenbergl: Lerchenauerstraße 240 (10 parking spaces)

Feldmoching-Hasenbergl combines large housing estates, long-established neighborhoods, and highly sought-after residential areas in northern Munich. In parts of the district, parking pressure is noticeable for residents, while additional space in public areas is barely available. The ten parking spaces create a small but concretely usable additional offer.

Hadern: Großhaderner Straße 44 (12 parking spaces)

Hadern is located in southwest Munich and is shaped by residential use as well as commuter traffic around Großhadern Hospital. After-hours parking creates additional parking spaces in the evenings and at night in an environment where residential areas, a hospital site, and everyday mobility intersect.

Schwabing-Freimann: Heidemannstraße 9 (17 parking spaces)

Freimann, north of the Frankfurter Ring, connects residential areas, commercial businesses, and heavily used transport routes in northern Munich. With 17 parking spaces, the Heidemannstraße location is the largest of the launch. It is therefore particularly well suited to demonstrating how existing retail space can make a concrete contribution to the neighborhood after store closing.

After Krefeld, Augsburg, and the Allgäu, the home market follows

After-hours parking is no longer a one-off project for Wemolo. The Munich-based company, founded in 2019 out of a project by UnternehmerTUM, is bringing the model to an increasing number of cities and regions together with retail and site partners. In Krefeld, ALDI SÜD opened 40 parking spaces at Gahlingspfad for after-hours parking in November 2025, together with Wemolo and the city. In July 2026, a second Krefeld location on Kölner Straße in Fischeln was added with 20 parking spaces. In Augsburg, ALDI SÜD launched in February 2026 with four locations and 110 parking spaces. In the Allgäu and Oberland regions, further ALDI SÜD locations have been added in Kaufbeuren-Neugablonz, Kempten, Grainau, and Oberau. Wemolo is also implementing comparable models with retail and site-operating partners in Berlin, Hamburg, and Innsbruck.

Sebastian Pyschik, Key Account Manager Retail at Wemolo: “What matters is everyday reliability. Anyone booking in the evening must know exactly when and where they are allowed to park. At the same time, it must be clear for ALDI SÜD that the spaces are available again for customers in the morning. Our system takes care of exactly this coordination: digital, barrier-free, and without additional effort on site.”

Data protection and operation

License plate recognition is carried out for a specific purpose and in compliance with the GDPR. License plates are recorded exclusively to check whether booked time slots are being adhered to. The data is generally deleted within 24 hours, provided there is no violation. The technology has been in use for years and has been legally reviewed accordingly.
