Augsburg Launches After-Work Parking: Aldi Opens Parking Spaces for Residents

Table of contents

The city, retail sector and a Munich-based tech company create 110 additional parking spaces. First downtown location bookable now. Oberhausen, Lechhausen and Göggingen to follow in February.

Augsburg, February 10, 2026. The city of Augsburg, Aldi Süd and the Munich-based technology company Wemolo are launching an after-work parking program at four locations across the city to address chronic parking pressure. The first Aldi location in the city center at Lechhauser Str. 15a with 30 parking spaces is already available. Further locations in Oberhausen (Weiherstraße 10a/20 places), Lechhausen (Steinerne Furt 57a/30 places) and Göggingen (Edisonstraße 4/30 places) will follow over the course of February. In total, around 110 additional parking spaces for residents will be created without any new construction or additional infrastructure.

Daytime parking for customers, nighttime parking for residents

The model follows a simple logic: retail parking spaces are available to customers during the day and are released digitally for residents in the evening and at night. This is enabled by AI-based license plate recognition, which Wemolo already operates across Europe at more than 3,500 parking facilities with over 300,000 parking spaces. The technology works without barriers and requires no structural modifications.

Residents book their parking space flexibly via a web app at www.go.wemolo.com/aldi, or alternatively via QR codes posted at the stores. Whether spontaneously for individual nights for 3 euros, on a weekly basis for 12 euros, or as a monthly subscription for 30 euros: Parking authorization applies Monday to Saturday from 6:30 pm to 8:30 am, and all day on Sundays.

City supports new parking solution for residents

Mayor Eva Weber welcomes the cooperation: “For mobility to work well in our city, we need to consider new solutions. The after-work parking model is a pragmatic approach that I expressly welcome because it makes good use of existing space. In this way, we create additional parking spaces and provide noticeable relief for residents.”

Four locations, four districts, one common theme

Anyone looking for a parking space in Augsburg in the evening knows the situation: the streets are full. After-work parking addresses exactly where this search has become routine: in densely built districts where residents, customers and commuters compete for the same spaces in the evening.

City centre/Jakobervorstadt — Lechhauser Strasse 15a (30 parking spaces)

Lechhauser Straße between the city center and the Lech district: those who live here often have poor chances of finding parking in the evening. Residents are looking for spaces. Aldi customers too. Commuters anyway. Three user groups, limited space, the same game every evening. Evening parking opens up capacity from 6:30 pm.

Oberhausen — Weiherstraße 10a (20 parking spaces)

In Oberhausen, residential living and shopping meet directly. The Aldi store supplies the traditional working-class district, and Weiherstraße is densely populated. In the evening, the situation intensifies: those coming home from work often find no space left. If they are lucky, they park three streets away. The 20 additional parking spaces ease this situation.

Lechhausen-Ost — Steinerne Furt 57a (30 parking spaces)

There is a lot going on in eastern Lechhausen: people live here, businesses operate in the commercial area, and leisure activities attract visitors. This brings life to the district. And parking pressure. After-work parking enables this multiple use without sealing new surfaces.

Göggingen — Edisonstraße 4 (30 parking spaces)

Göggingen is growing. New apartments, new residents, new parking demand. Added to this are visitors to the Hessing Clinics and the Kurhaus Park. In the evening, the spaces on Edisonstraße fill up quickly. The 30 parking spaces create additional capacity without sealing new surfaces.

Aldi opens parking areas for residents

Christoph Cleesattel, Director Real Estate at Aldi Süd: “The innovative evening parking model enables sustainable and efficient use of existing parking areas, providing noticeable relief especially for local residents. We see this cooperative model as a meaningful addition to the city’s mobility strategy and a helpful way to use existing resources responsibly.”

Proven model from other cities

Many large cities face similar challenges: parking shortages in residential areas and additional traffic caused by searching for parking spaces (in some cases up to 30 percent). Comparable night parking models are already running in other cities: in Innsbruck, Wemolo opened 15 locations for 24/7 resident parking in 2025 together with a regional supermarket chain. In Berlin, the company works with Getränke Hoffmann.

How the system works

Sebastian Pyschik, Key Account Manager Retail at Wemolo: “Augsburg shows how inner-city parking pressure can be eased without sealing new areas. The solution lies in the intelligent use of existing parking areas. Digital activation creates an offering that residents can use immediately and that can be flexibly expanded to different districts. The model is suitable for everyday use and is also interesting for other cities in the future.”

Data protection and operation

License plate recognition is purpose-specific and GDPR-compliant. License plates are recorded exclusively to monitor booked time windows. The data is generally deleted within 24 hours unless a violation has occurred.
